Exceptionally large verdicts are commonplace in asbestos lawsuits, but a multibillion-dollar verdict involving a product historically thought to be one of the safest tends to capture national attention. In July 2018, a Missouri jury awarded $4.69B to 22 women in the first lawsuit to allege that asbestos, contained in talcum baby powder, caused ovarian cancer. We will explain what talcum powder is and how it becomes contaminated with asbestos. We will also provide the legal history and development of this emerging risk as well as the current legal landscape and the science behind the allegations. Finally, we will address the potential liability faced by manufacturers, retailers, suppliers, and insurers and will discuss future implications.
